Baptism is a celebration proclaiming that we have died to our old life & been given new life in Jesus. It is the Biblical public expression of this life change. People are meant to know & see what Jesus has done in your life. He publicly died & was raised again for us- we are publicly to declare He is Lord & be baptized in His Name. Below is a brief outline of what to be thinking about as you anticipate being baptized.
As Jesus was buried & raised from the dead, Christians are baptized by submersion into water & raised out of the water symbolizing this death & life. Baptism is for those who have been given a new life by Jesus. it symbolizes that they have come from a life of sin that was leading to death & have now been given a new life in Christ that will end in eternal life. Baptism, and following Jesus, is not for those who merely want a better life- but those who recognize they need a completely new life and have found it in Jesus.
For Christians, baptism is a way to publicly declare what has already happened in our hearts. The Holy Spirit has opened our eyes to see Jesus as Savior and Lord, and so we have surrendered our everything to Him. When we are baptized, it is a sign to the world that we are His! We have been bought with His precious blood and our sins have been paid for by His sacrifice. We are no longer our own, but we belong to Him & live our lives for Him as we anticipate eternity with Him.
